Macau Casinos See Unexpected Revenue Boost Amid May Holiday Festivities

(Macau).- May Golden Week drives record-breaking footfall in Macau, with visitor numbers up 40% from 2023 and surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 7%.

Macau Casinos See Unexpected Revenue Boost Amid May Holiday Festivities

The Macau government initially forecasted daily arrivals between 127,000 and 140,000 during the five-day holiday, which includes the celebration of Buddha’s birth. However, actual figures exceeded expectations, with a daily average of 170,000 visitors.

Notably, hotel occupancy rates surged past 95% on the first day of the Golden Week, highlighting the strong demand for accommodations during the holiday period.

Macau's Gaming Sector Gains Momentum

J.P. Morgan estimated that gross gaming revenue (GGR) for Golden Week reached 5.1 billion patacas ($639 million)—marking the largest revenue beat in years. This surge provides Macau with renewed momentum in its recovery trajectory.

Industry analysts have noted the potential for sustained growth beyond Golden Week. DS Kim and Selina Li, analysts at J.P. Morgan, expressed a measured outlook on Macau’s recovery: "We learned a (very) hard way that it’s better to err on the side of caution when it comes to Macau forecasting, and we wouldn’t extrapolate such a strong recovery in our models yet. That being said, it goes without saying that our May forecast of flat year-on-year growth now has meaningful upside risks, and we wouldn’t be surprised if May GGR prints something like mid-to-high single digit growth year-on-year (vs consensus of flattish momentum)."

Investor Sentiment and Economic Uncertainty

Jefferies analyst Anne Ling echoed the positive industry sentiment, noting that visitation and gaming revenue updates exceeded expectations.

Despite concerns over the macroeconomy and ongoing trade tensions, Ling highlighted the solid performance of Macau’s gaming sector: “For Golden Week, our industry sources estimate ADR of MOP1.02bn, up 12% YoY. Mass ADR saw +60-65% MoM, while VIP was a bit weaker at +55-58%. We expect VIP win rate to be higher than normal at around 3.3-3.5%. GGR is estimated to be MOP600-650M per day for the rest of the month, translating into MOP20.7-22B, or +2% to +9% YoY, for the full month.”
